What are Restorations?

If you have missing, fractured, weakened, or decayed teeth, you may require a dental restoration. Dental restorations can be used to repair teeth that are broken, chipped, or cracked as well as those that have cavities. Tooth restoration methods can help treat different levels of tooth damage. Most of these procedures aim at improving our patient’s smiles.

How Do Dental Restorations Work?

Dental restorations can be used to transform your smile, improve the functionality of your teeth and help restore or repair damaged or missing parts of your tooth structures. Dental restorations can help you in the following ways.

Repairing Damage

Dental fillings and crowns can be used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Depending on the level of damage and the teeth’ position, our dental professionals will suggest a suitable tooth restoration technique to help you get a better smile.

Improving Oral Health

Unhealthy teeth may look discolored or brittle and are more susceptible to cavities and gum diseases. Dental restorations in Des Plaines can help deal with these issues and assist you in maintaining good oral hygiene. After removing the infected or decayed parts of your teeth, dental restorations can repair or restore your tooth structure. Healthier teeth mean better oral hygiene.

Correcting Genetic Imperfections

Many people have genetic imperfections in their teeth, which can be corrected using dental restorations. Treatment options such as veneers and dental crowns can address issues such as thinner teeth, shorter teeth, misaligned teeth, and divots or misshapen teeth. They can also help patients get better-aligned teeth and improved smiles.

Commonly Used Dental Restorations

Some of the most commonly used dental restoration procedures include the following.

Crowns

Dental crowns in Des Plaines encase the entire outer tooth to protect it from further damage and structural breakdown. Crowns are customized and fabricated in a lab. Dr. Kaminski removes the infected part of the tooth and roughens the surface to prepare it for crown placement. Then an impression of the prepared teeth is taken, and a temporary dental crown is placed on the teeth until the permanent crown is prepared in the lab. Once the permanent crown is ready, your dentist removes the temporary crown, cleans the tooth, and places the permanent crown on your teeth.

Fillings

Dental fillings treat tooth decay and cavities.  Around 85% of people aged between 20 to 34 years have had cavities in their permanent teeth. Cavities and decay occur due to a lack of proper brushing, bacteria accumulation, and acids formed from leftover food particles.

Fillings are a quick and easy procedure, usually completed in less than an hour. The infected part of the teeth is removed, and the filling is inserted into the tooth. Fillings are typically made of amalgam or composite resin.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding, which is an application of composite resin, can treat issues such as minor gaps between teeth, deformed teeth, minor chips, discolored teeth, and unresponsive stains. The composite resin is molded, and the color is matched to your teeth to look natural.

An etching formula is applied before dental bonding to prepare the teeth for the procedure. After the composite is inserted and molded into shape, it is hardened using a special dental laser. We then file down and polish the composite to finish the treatment.

Obturators

Palatal obturators are prosthesis’ designed to replace missing structural components of the upper arch including the palate and associated dentoalveolar structures. This prosthesis is placed immediately after surgery for oral cancer or to aid in the repair of a defect resulting from cleft lip and palate surgery. Dr. Kaminski is one of only a handful of dentists in the Chicagoland area that performs this service.
